The ScienceCampus and the Department for Interdisciplinary and Multiscalar Area Studies (DIMAS) at UR are pleased to anounce the lanuch of the fourth edition of the Prize for Outstanding Master's Theses in Area Studies at UR. The prize promotes the development of research and teaching with relevance to area studies in the fields of social sciences, humanities, theology, law and economics. It was awarded for the first time in 2020 and demonstrates the value of the close cooperation between the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) and UR.

Candidates can either nominate themselves or be nominated by their advisors. As well as students taking MA degrees, the prize is open to those completing Staatsexamen (in law for example) or those studying for a teaching degree (Lehramt) at UR. The thesis or final paper must have been submitted in the last three semesters (summer semester 2022, winter semester 2023/23 or summer semester 2023) at UR. The top prize is 400 EUR, with two equal second prizes of 200 EUR available. The deadline for applications is 12 November 2023. Please find the call for applications here in English and here in German.

In addition to the prize money, the winners also have the chance to publish in the Blog-Journal Frictions. Jana Stöxen (“Legacies of Romanian Socialism”) and Melanie Hussinger (“Ein Name, ein Leben, ein Zeichen. Historisches Gedenken im zivilgesellschaftlichen Projekt Poslednij Adres”), winners of prizes in 2020, have published texts there.
