Leading expert on Russian, Eurasian and transatlantic relations Marlene Laruelle will explore the consequences of policies towards Eurasia for broader transatlantic relations and the international order.

Looking at post-Soviet Eurasia from Europe and the US: Divergences of perspectives and shared visions

While “transatlantic values” have dominated the US-Europe relationship for several decades, the world’s current geopolitical and sociocultural transformations have challenged the previously shared vision of the broader notion of Eurasia. While the US tends now to look at Russia through a “great power competition” prism that is mostly focused on China, Europe offers more diversified policy perspectives, depending on the country and on political orientations. In this lecture, Marlene Laruelle reflects on her ten year experience in Washington DC and her knowledge of American think tank culture and the growing divergences that seem to emerge with many European perspectives on the way to interpret post-Soviet transformations.

Marlene Laruelle (George Washington University) is Director of the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (IERES), the Illiberalism Studies Program and the Central Asia Program. She is also Co-Director of PONARS-Eurasia. She works on political, social and cultural changes in the post-Soviet space.
