CfA: Workshop – How to prepare an excellent doctoral project

Application Deadline: 23 April 2025

Do you want to pursue a doctoral project about Eastern and Southeastern Europe in history, linguistics, cultural studies or social sciences, but do not yet have a final dissertation proposal? We warmly invite applications for the workshop “How to Prepare an Excellent Doctoral Project?”, taking place in Regensburg on 23–24 June 2025. This workshop is designed for graduates who have recently completed or are close to completing a postgraduate (Master’s) degree, as well as for researchers in predoctoral positions or scholarship holders who are preparing to submit research proposals. Participants will receive valuable guidance on securing research funding in Germany and aligning their projects with the research profile in Regensburg. The workshop will include hands-on sessions on refining project ideas and crafting key elements of a proposal, such as the abstract and literature review. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with peers and experienced researchers, gaining insightful feedback to strengthen their proposals. The workshop will take place in English, but support will also be available for German-language project proposals.

The workshop is jointly organised by three programs at the University of Regensburg with strong expertise in Area Studies: the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies, the project A Small but Fertile Field: Strengthening Southeast European Studies in Regensburg (seeFField), and the Leibniz ScienceCampus Europe and America in the Modern World, a joint project with the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS). Accordingly, we encourage projects specializing in East and Southeast Europe, as well as projects addressing the regions in their global and transregional contexts. Candidates from disciplines such as history, anthropology, literary studies, linguistics, cultural studies, or related fields are welcome to apply. We can offer a contribution to travel costs, if required. We will provide accommodation in Regensburg for up to two nights for those from outside the area. Please send your applications by email as a single PDF file by 23 April 2025 to predoc.see@ur.de.

The applications must include:

  • A covering letter outlining your motivation for applying (max. 250 words – in English only)
  • A short CV (in English or German)
  • An abstract for a doctoral project (max. 350 words – in English or German)
