Der WissenschaftsCampus lädt herzlich zur Präsentation des neu erschienenen Bandes Mediterranean Islands and Coastal Areas: Cultural and Linguistic Diversity through the Ages ein, der im Rahmen des Forschungsnetzwerks MS ISLA veröffentlicht wurde. Die Herausgeber*innen des Sammelbands, Laura Linzmeier (Universität Regensburg) und Thorsten Kruse (Universität Münster), geben Einblicke in dessen konzeptionelle Ausrichtung sowie zentrale Erkenntnisse. Ergänzend wirft Jonas Hock (Institut für Romanistik, Universität Regensburg) einen Blick zurück auf die Aktivitäten des Netzwerks und stellt weitere Publikationen vor.

Die Veranstaltung wird gemeinsam vom ScienceCampus, dem MS ISLA-Netzwerk, dem Institut für Romanistik und dem DIMAS organisiert und findet auf Deutsch statt.

Redner*innen:

• Laura Linzmeier ist akademische Rätin a. Z. für romanische Sprachwissenschaft (Italienisch, Französisch) an der Universität Regensburg. In ihrem aktuellen Forschungsprojekt untersucht sie die Schriftlichkeit maritimer Expertengruppen in der französischen Sprachgeschichte des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts. Sie war Co-Sprecherin des Netzwerks MS ISLA.

• Thorsten Kruse ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Interdisziplinäre Zypern-Studien der Universität Münster. Zu seinen Forschungsschwerpunkten zählen die neuere Geschichte Zyperns und Griechenlands sowie die deutsche Zeitgeschichte von 1945 bis 1990. Er war Mitglied des Netzwerks MS ISLA.

• Jonas Hock ist akademischer Rat a. Z. am Institut für Romanistik der Universität Regensburg. Derzeit vertritt er die Professur für Französische Literatur im europäischen Kontext an der Universität des Saarlandes sowie am Institut d’Études Françaises in Saarbrücken. Er war Co-Sprecher des Netzwerks MS ISLA.

• Jan-Christoph Marschelke ist Geschäftsführer der Forschungsstelle Kultur- und Kollektivwissenschaft an der Universität Regensburg.
• Jacqueline Nießer arbeitet als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin für das Horizon Europe Twinning Projekt RETLAMI-SEE – „Enhancing Capacities for Quality and Impactful Research on Transformations, Labour and Migration in Southeast-Europe” im Bereich Geschichte des IOS Regensburg.
• Verena Ebermeier war wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im DFG-Projekt "Historische Narratologie und Raumchronistik: Herkunfts- und Gründungserzählungen in der bayerischen Landesgeschichtsschreibung des 15. Jahrhunderts" an der Universität Regensburg.

Zum Netzwerk:

MS ISLA (Mediterranean Studies on Island Areas) war ein vom CITAS gefördertes Forschungsnetzwerk, das Wissenschaftler*innen der Universität Regensburg mit externen Partnern zusammenbrachte. Von 2020 bis 2023 widmete sich das Netzwerk der kulturellen und sprachlichen Vielfalt mediterraner Insel- und Küstenregionen – betrachtet aus einer transregionalen und vergleichenden Area-Studies-Perspektive. Angesichts der komplexen regionalen, kulturellen und politischen Verflechtungen, die den Mittelmeerraum über die Jahrhunderte geprägt haben, verfolgte MS ISLA das Ziel, multidirektionale und interdisziplinäre Blickwinkel zu fördern. Ein zentrales Anliegen war es, die mediterrane Regionalexpertise der Universität Regensburg in enger Zusammenarbeit mit universitären und außeruniversitären Partnern zu stärken und weiter auszubauen.

This multilingual and interdisciplinary anthology from the MS ISLA research group provides a comprehensive discussion of the cultural and linguistic diversity of islands and coastal areas of the Mediterranean region throughout history. The volume comprises contributions from a range of disciplines, including history, linguistics, literature and cultural studies, by network members and researchers, with a particular focus on specific Mediterranean areas, their cultures, languages, and literatures. The contributions adopt diverse approaches from various disciplines, including historical, comparative, and multidirectional analyses. The key focus of this study concerns the influence of island characteristics on the formation of island identities, cultural expressions, and linguistic characteristics, with these phenomena being examined within the context of historical migratory patterns and cultural exchange.

The ScienceCampus is pleased to invite you to the launch of the new volume Mediterranean Islands and Coastal Areas: Cultural and Linguistic Diversity through the Ages, published as part of the MS ISLA research network. The editors of the volume, Laura Linzmeier (U Regensburg) und Thorsten Kruse (U Münster), will offer insights into its conceptual framing and key findings. In addition, Jonas Hock (U Regensburg) will provide a retrospective on MS ISLA and present further publications from the network. The event is jointly organised by the ScienceCampus in collaboration with MS ISLA, the Institute for Romance Studies, and DIMAS.

Speakers:

• Laura Linzmeier is Assistant Professor in Romance Linguistics (Italian, French) at the University of Regensburg. Her current project investigates the use of French in maritime transit zones during the 17th and 18th centuries, offering new perspectives on the history of French language standardization. She was co-speaker of the MS ISLA Network.

• Thorsten Kruse is a research associate at the Institute of Interdisciplinary Cyprus Studies at the University of Münster. His research interests include the modern history of Cyprus and Greece, as well as German history from 1945 to 1990. He was a member of the MS ISLA Network.

• Jonas Hock is Assistant Professor in Romance Literature at the University of Regensburg. Currently, he is deputising the Professorship for French Literature in the European Context at Saarland University, as well as at the Institut d’Études Françaises in Saarbrücken. He was co-speaker of the MS ISLA Network.

• Jacqueline Nießer is a research associate for the Horizon Europe Twinning project RETLAMI-SEE – Enhancing Capacities for Quality and Impactful Research on Transformations, Labour and Migration in Southeast Europe in the history department of the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) in Regensburg.

• Verena Ebermeier is a research associate in the DFG-funded project Historical Narratology and Spatial Chronistics: Origin and Foundation Narratives in Bavarian Historiography of the 15th Century at the University of Regensburg.

About the Network:

MS ISLA (Mediterranean Studies on Island Areas) was a CITAS-funded research initiative bringing together scholars from the University of Regensburg and external partners. Running from 2020 to 2023, the network focused on the cultural and linguistic diversity of Mediterranean island and coastal regions, examined through the lens of transregional and comparative Area Studies. Given the complex regional, cultural, and political interdependencies that have shaped the Mediterranean over the centuries, MS ISLA seeked to foster multidirectional and interdisciplinary perspectives. A core aim was to consolidate and expand the University of Regensburg’s regional expertise in Mediterranean Studies in collaboration with (non-)university partners.
