Speaker Series | 26 June, 8:30 | Charlotte Kaiser (Jena) | Entre ‘fédérastophobie’ et diversité sexuelle. La nation québécoise et la représentation queer dans le cinéma contemporain au Québec

We are delighted to welcome Charlotte Kaiser to the fourth session of the LSC speaker series Intersectionality and Area Studies: Interdisciplinary Perspectives. She will give a presentation in french on The Quebec Nation and Queer Representation in Contemporary Quebec Cinema (Entre ‘fédérastophobie’ et diversité sexuelle. La nation québécoise et la représentation queer dans le cinéma contemporain au Québec). While the presentation will be in French, participants are welcome to ask questions in German during the joint discussion.

Abstract:

Québec hat eine reiche Kinolandschaft, in der spätestens seit den 1960er Jahren gesellschaftliche Konflikte ausgehandelt werden. Besonders prominent ist dabei immer wieder die „nationale Frage“, also die Debatte über die Zugehörigkeit der Provinz Québecs zum föderalen Staat Kanada. Nationale Identität wird im Film bereits seit den 1960er Jahren mit geschlechtlich-sexueller Identität verknüpft. Das filmische Repertoire, dem dieser Vortrag gewidmet sein wird, reicht dabei von einer Verschmelzung von Homophobie und Unabhängigkeitsstreben in der „fédérastophobie“ über queere Nostalgie bis hin zu progressiven Inszenierungen queerer Lebensrealitäten im aktuellen Spielfilm. Neben einem Überblick über die Filmgeschichte Québecs werde die Verbindungen zwischen Sichtbarkeiten, nationaler Identität und Erinnerung thematisiert und kritisch beleuchtet.

Charlotte Kaiser:

Dr Charlotte Kaiser postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Intercultural Business Communication at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. She holds a PhD in French Cultural Studies and Intercultural Communication (2023) and is specialised in cultural theory and communication research with a focus on Québec Studies as well as intersectionality and diversity.

This series is organised by Natali Stegmann, Professor of East and Central European History at UR and Birgit Hebel-Bauridl, Managing Director of the Regensburg European American Forum (REAF) at UR, both coordinators of the ScienceCampus Research Module Towards Multi-Polar and Multi-Scalar Area Studies.This talk in particular, is organised by Dagmar Schmelzer, Professor at the Institute for Romance Studies (UR).
