ScienceCampus Second Funding Phase Begins

| News

We are delighted to have been awarded funding from the Leibniz Association for a second period, running for four years until 2028.

The Leibniz ScienceCampus Europe and America in the Modern World is delighted that its second funding period starts today, running for four years to 2028. Supported by the Leibniz Association, the platform serves to strengthen collaboration between the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) and the University of Regensburg (UR), furthering the broader area studies research agenda in Regensburg.

Several new colleagues from IOS and UR are joining the ScienceCampus as Principal Investigators, continuing the work of the existing research modules and initiating their transformation into new research trajectories focusing on (In)Security and Sovereignty, Translating Knowledge and Cultures, Refugee Worldmaking, Uneven Economic Flows, and the cross-cutting theme of Multiscalar, Augmented Area Studies.

We are looking forward to deepening established collaborations with our partners in Regensburg and abroad, while giving impetus to new partnerships with institutions in Canada, Chile, Poland and the US, as well as here in Germany. Colleagues from UR and IOS are welcome to apply for outgoing research fellowships to our partners across Europe and the Americas. The deadline is 14 October. We also look forward to welcoming colleagues to Regensburg from our partner institutions.

The ScienceCampus is looking to recruit early career researchers for its second funding phase. We have a one-year, part-time predoctoral researcher position available at UR, starting 1 April 2025 at the earliest. Applications are welcome until 30 November 2024. Another position for an early postdoctoral post at IOS will be announced shortly.

The ScienceCampus will be marking the conclusion of its first funding phase while giving an impulse to the project’s development over the next four years with an international conference from 23-25 April 2025 on Navigating Epistemic, Cultural, and Legal Translations: Processes, Hierarchies, Spaces. The call for papers is now open and we welcome applications until 31 October 2024.

The Winter Semester 2024/25 also begins today and we are looking forward to a full programme, including extensive cooperation with the Graduate School and other partners. Each Wednesday at 14:15 this semester, we will be hosting a lecture series (Ringvorlesung) on the theme of War. Peace. Security featuring invited guests and experts from Regensburg. Students are welcome to register for the course, while the lectures are open to colleagues and the public. The 2024 Annual Conference will be taking place from 27-29 November. Playing War: Simulations, Games, Exercises, and the Representations of Military Force and Violence takes place in collaboration with our new partner, the Bundeswehr Centre for Military History and Social Sciences (ZMSBw) in Potsdam. On 17 October, there will be a workshop organized by Cindy Wittke (IOS) and Mélanie Sadozai (DIMAS, UR) on (Un)frozen Conflicts: Polymorph aspects of contested sovereignty and multi-dimensional borders in Europe and beyond. Interested colleagues and students can register with us until 10 October to attend. Check out our calendar for the full series of events this semester.

We look forward to creating more innovative output, including further developing the Frictions blog:journal and top class publications, such as this volume, Sovereignty through Practice Multiscalarity, Reflexivity, and Interdisciplinarity, edited by Jon-Wyatt Matlack and Elia Bescotti, which will appear shortly with Routledge.

The offices of the ScienceCampus are now located in the ground floor of Sedanstr. 1, Rooms 045 and 051.
