LSC Recommends: Deterrence, Coercion, and Risk Escalation: Contributions from and for Area Studies - International Workshop

When? 18-20 February 2026

Where? Room 319, IOS Regensburg

The workshop brings together leading scholars of international relations and peace and conflict studies to explore how contemporary conflicts reshape our understanding of deterrence. Over three days, participants engage with cutting‑edge research on methodological innovation, nuclear strategy, and regional security dynamics. The workshop opens with a focus on new approaches to deterrence studies before turning to in‑depth analyses of Russia’s war against Ukraine, including escalation risks, nuclear coercion, and the strategic implications of Western arms deliveries. Cross-regional perspectives broaden the discussion, with sessions on South Asia, balancing and shifting threat perceptions, and reflections on signalling, credibility, and manoeuvring in performing deterrence within the Transatlantic community. Additional panels highlight ongoing projects, emerging research, and institutional initiatives in the field of peace and conflict studies. Through presentations, feedback sessions, and open discussions, the event fosters interdisciplinary exchange and strengthens collaboration across area studies and IR and security research.

The event, in English, is accessible via Zoom upon registration. For information about the program and participation, please send an email to bescotti@ios-regensburg.de
