You are warmly invited to attend the Keynote Lecture of the International Conference "Crisis Narratives and the Pandemic" on Thursday 19 May at 16:15 CET. The lecture by Kristen Ghodsee and Mitchell Orenstein (both U Pennsylvania), "Taking Stock of Shock: Social Consequences of the 1989 Revolutions", is also part of the CITAS and Leibniz ScienceCampus "Europe and America" lecture series (Ringvorlesung), Frictions and Transformations of Globalization.
In their recent book Taking Stock of Shock(Oxford UP, 2021) Kristen Ghodsee and Mitchell A. Orenstein examine the social consequences of the 1989 revolutions. Drawing on their expertise in ethnography and political science, they explore the variety of narratives on transition that have emerged not only across 27 countries over 30 years, but also the diversity of disciplinary perspectives in research on this experience. Their multidisciplinary approach enables them to discuss the losers as well as the winners of transition, as they develop a new narrative that highlights inequalities. In this keynote lecture, they will also consider the consequences of experiences of socialism and transition for attitudes towards vaccines and state-led efforts to control the pandemic.
Kristen R. Ghodsee is an award-winning Professor of Russian and East European Studies and a Member of the Graduate Group in Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. She has written eight academic books on gender, socialism, and postsocialism, examining the everyday experiences of upheaval and displacement that continue to haunt the region to this day.
Mitchell Orenstein Professor of Russian and East European Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the political economy of transition in Central and Eastern Europe, the role of ideas in economic policy reform, and Russia’s hybrid war on the West.
